How to Create a Bootable Windows 7 USB Drive from Linux?

ou can actually create a bootable windows 7 USB drive from any of your Linux distribution that may be Ubuntu, Fedora, and other Linux distributions without burning a CD. If there is some problem with your Computer’s DVd-ROM then this trick is much more beneficial to you.

The things you require before proceeding is a USB drive which is greater than 4GB in size, Windows 7 image(.iso) file that may be saved into your hard drive or DVD-ROM and the lists of softwares recommended below. So lets proceed now.

Download Gparted

The first thing all you have to do is download Gparted for your Linux. If you are using Ubuntu then you can directly download it from the Ubuntu Software center.

Or you can download it using the following code in the terminal.

$ sudo apt-get install gparted

Format the Drive as NTFS

After the installation is complete Plug your USB drive into your system and Open Gparted from System > Administration > GParted Partition Editor. Now select your USB driver from the top right drop-down list.

If you have one hard drive in your computer then your USB drive should be “sdb”. Now right click your USb drive in Gparted and select “Unmount”. Now you will be able to select the NTFS partitation from Partition > Format > ntfs.

Your USb drive will be formatted in ntfs in few seconds. Now you have to enable boot in gparted which can be done from “Manage flags”, then check the “boot” flag.

After the process upto here is completed, Unplug your USB drive and plug it again into your system.

Create Bootable USB drive

The first thing here you have to do is you need to download UNetbootin. UNetbootin allows you to create bootable Live USB drives for Ubuntu, Fedora, and other Linux distributions without burning a CD. After UNetbootin is installed open it and select the “Diskimage” and then browse Windows 7 .ISO file from your harddrive or DVD. At the bottom of the Software check the “Show all Drives” box and then select your USB drive.Now if your USB drive is “dev/sdb” (you may know it from Gparted) then you’ll have to select “/dev/sdb1″ in UNetbootin. Now simply Click the Ok button and wait for your files to be copied in the USb drive and see it work as the Bootable flash drive

1.Go to fonts folder. To open fonts folder, just type “fonts” in the Vista Start Menu or in Run dialog box.

2.Delete useless fonts that you won’t use. For those who don’t know, Windows takes enough amount of time to load all fonts during the boot process. Installing more than 100 fonts will significantly reduce your system boot speed.

3.Next major time killers are startup programs.These startup programs not only increases the boot time but also frustrates with pop ups in your system tray. Open “System Configuration” by typing “msconfig”(without quotes) in the Vista Start Menu Search box or in the Run dialog box. Under the “Startup” tab remove the programs which are not necessary at startups(Ex:Pc Suite,Pc Sync,Realtek voice manager).However, I prefer no programs at startup.

4.Next switch to “Boot” tab and select “No GUI boot” and click “Apply” to save the changs. If Windows prompts for restart, select ‘Exit without restart’ option.

5.This tweak is only for Vista with multicore processors (Dual, quad and octa core processors). Under the “Boot” tab of “System Configuration”, open the option named “Advanced options”, check the box named “Number of processors” and select the number of processors you have.Click “Apply”.

6.Navigate to “services” tab, remove unnecessary services (only if you are not using) like Parental Controls, Telephony, Remote registry, Fax, Ready boost to increase the boot speed.Remove unnecessary services only.

7.Download a free utility called “Bootvis” from here(works only for XP). Extract and unzip the file to Desktop and run the Bootvis.Go to Trace > Boottime+driver delays and reboot the system. Wait for a while to get further message and instruction from bootvis to proceed.Worst part is it doesn’t work with Vista.

8.Use the boot defragmentation feature in Winows. To enable go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOptimizeFunction In the right side pane, right click on the option “Enable” and select “Modify”. Type in “Y’ to enable boot defrgmentation.

9.Defrag your C drive using Vista’s in-built tool. If you think the Vista’s in-built defragger is slow, you can use the free Defraggler software from here.

10.Fix all your registry errors with a freeware tool called CCleaner. Keeping the registry clean will boost your system performance drametically.

11.If you dual boot, select the default operating system to boot and also, lower the amount of time to wait for you make a selection.

12.If you are not using Floppy drive, disable it in the BIOS. If your BIOS supports Quick Post and Disabling Boot Delay, just enable those features.

13.One more boot time killer is Startup sound. You can disable this as follows:type “mmsys.cpl” in the run dialog box and hit enter. Navigate to “Sounds” tab and disable the option called “Play Windows Startup Sound”(only in Vista). In Xp, use the option named “No Sounds” from the drop down menu in the “Sounds” tab.

14.Never use third-party boot and logon screens as they slow down your boot process significantly.

Here a trick that can help speed up your current modem without shelling out the big bucks.



There is a setting located in your windows registry called the Maximum Transfer Unit (MTU). This determines the size of the packets of data sent between your and your server. In Windows 95, this setting is has a value of 1,500 bytes when the actual size of internet packets is 1,000 bytes. This can sometimes slow things down. To remedy the situation, simply follow these steps:

Step 1: go to start menu and type Run and type regedit,
In the registry editor (Start > Run > regedit.exe), navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\NetTrans. In the NetTrans folder you should find another folder named "000x" in which x represents a fourth digit. Right-click on the "000x" folder and select New and StringValue. Rename the item that appears in the panel on the right side to MaxMTU, then double-click it to bring up the Edit String box and give it a velue of 1002.



Remember to keep playing with the MaxMTU value until you feel that your internet connection has greatly sped up. Some people report huge speed gains using this tricks, while others hardly notice a difference. In any case, it's definetly worth a try.

3. Type in "command" and hit ok

10. Click on "Use the following IP address" under the "General" tab
11. Create an IP address (It doesn't matter what it is. I just type 1 and 2 until i fill the area up).
12. Press "Tab" and it should automatically fill in the "Subnet Mask" section with default numbers.
13. Hit the "Ok" button here
14. Hit the "Ok" button again

You should now be back to the "Local Area Connection" screen.

15. Right-click back on "Local Area Connection" and go to properties again.
16. Go back to the "TCP/IP" settings
17. This time, select "Obtain an IP address automatically"

20. You now have a new IP address

With a little practice, you can easily get this process down to 15 seconds.

P.S:
This only changes your dynamic IP address, not your ISP/IP address. If you plan on hacking a website with this trick be extremely careful, because if they try a little, they can trace it back

Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the 'Explain' tab i.e."By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default."
So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO. This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.It works on Win 2000 as well.
